In a partnership between the High Technology Development Corporation and the Advanced Alternative Power Technology Transformation Office (A2PT2O) at Robins Air Force Base, the Air Force established a National Demonstration Center at Hickam Air Force Base to demonstrate and evaluate alternative fuel vehicle technologies.
Phase I of this initiative provided a light duty electric vehicle fleet for base support operations, an all-electric shuttle bus for flight crew transportation support, and high power rapid chargers for use with the new electric vehicles. Phase II includes a fuel cell/battery hybrid bus, multi-vehicle charging stations, and a 25,000 lb hybrid electric aircraft loader.
Future projects include on-site hydrogen generation and storage, fuel cell powered light carts, and step vans powered by fuel cells and/or lithium batteries. HCATT is attempting to expand the scope of the National Demonstration Center to a level that will support the initiation of a hydrogen-based operation at installation level.
