micro:bit hardware hacking workshop

Event Details

You are invited to our micro:bit Hardware Hacking event (a fun Python Programming and hardware I/O learning experience) hosted by the University of Hawaii Innovation Lab (iLab) and sponsored by Booz Allen Hamilton.
Skills required: a basic knowledge of Python is required. You don't have to be an expert, but this tutorial should not be your first scripting experience. (i.e. understand strings, lists, dictionaries, for loops, if statements, etc)
You will receive and take home (covered by the $20 entrance fee):
• a BBC micro:bit (http://microbit.org/guide/features/) • battery pack • cable • batteries
You will learn to subject hardware to your will using only the power of Python. We will teach the skills and tools to operate the hardware components on the micro:bit:
• accelerometer • compass input buttons • input/output pins • display panel • and more
Mentors will be present to help you during the tutorial. See the FAQs below for more details.
Bring your laptop! We plan on spending as much time, hands-on, writing code >>> while having fun.
Food and beverages will be provided.
Parking is available near the facility, for a fee.
-------------------------------------------------------
Space is limited, so register soon. (We often have a waitlist, so if your schedule changes, please cancel your RSVP).
Questions? email info@pyhawaii.com
FAQS: What version of Python do I need? The workshop is based on MicroPython (limited functionality version of Python 3) and will use the mu editor: https://codewith.mu/
Download the editor and install it before coming to the workshop. If you have problems doing so, email info@pyhawaii.com. If we can't help via email, mentors will work with you as soon as you arrive to try and get things fixed. Please arrive promptly.
Will you have computers available for attendees? No, you will need to bring your own computer and it should have the mu editor installed.
Are we allowed to work in teams? Participants may work in teams.
I haven’t programmed before, can I come? Some programming skill is necessary to work through the tutorial. Due to the short time frame, we won't have time to start attendees from scratch. You don't have to be an expert, but this tutorial should not be your first scripting experience. (i.e. understand strings, lists, dictionaries, for loops, if statements, etc)
How do I pay for the registration? Bring cash or check (payable to Chalmer Lowe) to the event.
